What Is Intumescent Coating?
Intumescent coating is a specialized fire-protective coating applied over certain closed-cell spray foam products. Unlike ordinary paint, it is formulated to react when exposed to high heat by expanding and creating a protective char layer.
This reaction helps delay heat and flame from reaching the spray foam beneath the coating. Intumescent products must be compatible with the specific foam being used and applied at the required thickness for the approved system.
For qualifying buildings, this can provide a practical alternative to completely covering the foam with drywall, metal panels or other rigid materials. It is especially useful in barns, shops, warehouses and similar buildings where the insulation is intentionally left visible.
