If your upstairs bedrooms are always hotter than the rest of your house during the summer, you’re not alone.
Many homeowners assume they need a larger air conditioner, additional ductwork, or a mini split system to solve the problem. In reality, the issue is often much simpler.
This recent project is a great example.
The Problem
Our customer had two children’s bedrooms located above and beside the garage with a vaulted ceiling.
During the hottest summer days, the home’s thermostat would read 69°F, but the children’s bedrooms would still reach 75°F.
That six-degree difference created real problems.
The children were waking up throughout the night because their rooms were so warm. On especially hot days, they were sleeping in only diapers, yet they were still sweating.
To compensate, the homeowners kept lowering the thermostat for the entire house.
The downside?
- The master bedroom became uncomfortably cold.
- The HVAC system had to work much harder.
- Energy costs increased.
- Even after lowering the thermostat, the upstairs bedrooms still weren’t comfortable.
Why This Happens
This is one of the most common comfort complaints we hear.
The bedrooms were separated from the rest of the home by an attic space over the garage. Over time, several issues developed:
- Air leakage around attic penetrations
- Heat entering through the attic
- Insufficient insulation over the bedrooms
- Air leakage through the attic access panels located in each bedroom ceiling
Even if your HVAC system is working perfectly, conditioned air can’t keep up when your attic continuously transfers heat into the rooms below.
Our Solution
Rather than replacing equipment, we focused on improving the home’s thermal envelope.
Our crew completed:
- Professional attic air sealing
- New blown-in attic insulation over the bedrooms
- Additional insulation above the garage
- Air sealing of both attic access panels in the bedroom ceilings
These improvements reduced unwanted heat transfer while preventing conditioned air from escaping into the attic.

The Results
The improvement was immediate.
Before the project:
- Main thermostat: 69°F
- Kids’ bedrooms: 75°F
After the project:
- Kids’ bedrooms consistently measured 69°F on their room monitors.
- Some days, the bedrooms actually measured one degree cooler than the home’s main thermostat.
Even better:
The homeowners were able to increase their thermostat setting from 69°F to 71°F, reducing cooling demand while making the house more comfortable overall.
Their master bedroom was no longer freezing just to keep the upstairs bedrooms at a reasonable temperature.
Most importantly, the children began sleeping comfortably through the night.
Comfort Isn’t Just About Temperature
When people think about insulation, they often think about lowering utility bills.
While energy savings are certainly important, comfort is what families notice every day.
Better sleep.
Fewer hot spots.
More even temperatures throughout the home.
A quieter HVAC system that doesn’t have to run constantly.
These improvements can make a home feel completely different without replacing expensive heating and cooling equipment.
Could Your Home Have the Same Problem
If any room in your house is consistently hotter or colder than the rest, the issue may not be your furnace or air conditioner.
It could be:
- Poor attic insulation
- Air leaks
- Unsealed attic access panels
- Heat gain through the attic
- Missing insulation over garages or bonus rooms
A professional insulation assessment can identify these issues and recommend the right solution.
Another Happy Homeowner
Here’s what this homeowner had to say after the project:
“The kids were sweating and waking up at all hours of the night. On the hottest days, we had them sleeping in just diapers, and even that wasn’t enough. After Insulation Hub air sealed our attic, upgraded the insulation, and sealed the attic access panels, the kids’ rooms are now reading 69° on their Nanit cameras. Some days they’re actually cooler than the rest of the house. We can finally keep our thermostat at 71°, save money, and our master bedroom isn’t freezing anymore.”
Stories like this are why we do what we do.
If you’re dealing with hot upstairs bedrooms, uncomfortable bonus rooms, or uneven temperatures throughout your home, Insulation Hub can help identify the cause and recommend the right solution.
